When I was a kid, there was a summer camp called Aces that I wanted to attend every year, and I was so jealous of the kids who were able to attend. Sadly I never got the chance but from 6th to 8th grade, I got my first taste of sports when I played soccer for my school.
One day, however, my dad took me to a Fresno Falcons hockey game and I fell in love. Ever since, I knew I wanted to be a goalie. It looked by far to be the coolest position and I worked a summer job to buy gear and attend a camp. I was nervous but had the MOST fun! I started to play in-house with other kids and eventually joined Adult League. I started with Level 3 (beginner), then moved through Level 2 and eventually landed in Level 1 (advanced).
During that time, I started playing travel hockey with a women’s team in the Bay Area. I played with a few teams over the years, travelling all over the US for tournaments with my friends. I competed at the National Championships quite a few times, winning silver and quite a few bronze medals.
At one point, one of my hockey friends started playing roller derby and I thought I’d give that a try! I played for about 5 years with a local team and traveled around the west coast for various bouts. That was definitely a fun time in my life.
Eventually, I was introduced to floorball by another hockey friend. He suggested I try it out and after over 10 years of being a hockey goalie, I wanted to play defense for a change of pace (being a goalie is not mentally the easiest position to play!). I ran around for a few years until I was put in contact with the US Women’s Floorball Team. I went to a qualifier for the WFC in 2015 and we beat Canada in 2 games to advance to the WFC! I didn’t attend the WFC that year, however, because I knew my place and I’m definitely not a great defenseman.
Two years later, the US team qualified again for the 2017 WFC, but their goalies dropped out and I was asked by the team if I would switch to being a goalie full time because of my hockey experience. I agreed and I traveled to Bratislava, Slovakia to play for the US team in December 2017. We finished 11th and I had a great time. Since then, I’ve stuck with being a goalie in both floorball and hockey.
In the midst of all this, I competed in Heavy Athletics in 2018 at the Highland Games in my town and came in 2nd! I would love to dedicate more time to this sport, especially since I need to learn how to successfully toss a caber!
in February 2019, we had another qualifier against Canada and we got the bid to play in Neuchâtel, Switzerland in December. This time, I had one of my hockey friends join and she’s coming to Switzerland with me!
Starting in March 2019, I started indoor rock climbing and I don’t think I’ve so quickly fallen in love with a sport (besides hockey, of course). Next up I want to start golf and pickleball. Some day I’d also love to join a bowling league because why not?
